Remember Red Skelton?
Do you remember Red Skelton? Do you love your country? Do you consider the
Pledge of Allegiance to be a solemn vow? If you answered yes to any of those,
you need to watch a clip from Red's show where he explains the words to
the Pledge. And be sure to listen closely to the ending.

Republican Women Leading the Way on Legislation
North Carolina Federation of Republican Women took the lead on several
legislative issues at the winter board meeting on February 2, 2008. In an
effort to promote legislation that NCFRW has determined to focus attention
on this year, a number of resolutions were presented and passed unanimously.
The following resolutions were passed: to promote passage of
"Jessica's Law" in N.C, to encourage a marriage amendment to the N.C.
Constitution, to encourage passage of the "Unborn Victims Bill" and to
prohibit the issuance of drivers licenses to illegal aliens through
legislation. Go to the NC
Federation of Republican Women web site to read the resolutions.

Up In The Air (on the lighter side)
A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude
and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, "Excuse me, can you
help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know
where I am."
The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon,
approximately 30 feet above ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level.
You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees 49.09
minutes west longitude."
She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be a Republican." "I am," replied the
man. "How did you know?" "Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told
me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to do with your information,
and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me."
The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Democrat." "I am," replied the
balloonist. "How did you know?" "Well," said the man, "You don't know where
you are or where you're going. You've risen to where you are due to a large
quantity of hot air. You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and
you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you
were in before we met, but, somehow, now it's my fault."
A Tax on the Rich
We often hear the liberal Democrats promising to increase the share of the
tax burden the wealthiest Americans pay, supposedly reducing the share some of
their base constituency pays. This plays well to most of the crowd that already pays
little or no federal income tax. But the April 2007 issue of The American
Legion magazine sheds the light of reality on this fallacious concept by quoting from
a report issued from the Joint Economic Committee of the 109th Congress. This
committee found that the "top half of taxpayers ranked by income continue to
pay more than 96 percent of federal individual income taxes, while the bottom
half accounts for just less than 3.5 percent." The magazine goes on to state
that in actuality, "the top 1 percent paid 34.27 percent of federal personal
income taxes in 2003, and the top 10 percent paid 65.84 percent." Keep those
numbers in mind the next time you hear a candidate promise to shift more of
the tax burden to the richest Americans.

An Interesting Quiz
Ok, class. Today we take a short quiz to find out where you truly stand on
the political landscape. Take the
World's Smallest
Political Quiz, a short survey consisting of 10 questions covering two
major issue groups. Or to provide more detail in the analysis of your
political leanings, try
The Enhanced Political Quiz,
an updated version with multiple-choice questions covering 11 issues. Both
give you the result on a two-dimensional diamond that ranges from Liberal on
the left to Conservative on the right, and from Libertarian (less government,
more personal freedom and responsibility) on the top to Authoritarian (more
government, less personal freedom and responsibility) on the bottom. How do
you score? Take the test (or take both!) and find out.
