NC Voter Information
The following is provided as a public service. Remember, you can't vote
if you are not registered!
Voter Registration
All U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years of age, have resided in the state
for at least 30 days, and are not under felony conviction, are eligible to
register to vote in North Carolina. To register, appear in person at the
Department of Motor Vehicles or at your County Elections Office, usually
located at your county courthouse or city hall. You can also register to vote
by mail by completing and returning a voter registration form, which is
available at public libraries, public schools, public service agencies,
and county Board of Elections.
The Federal Elections Commission has made available the
National Voter Registration Form
in Adobe Acrobat Reader PDF format. If you need the Reader or an upgrade to
your current reader, you may download a copy for free from the
Adobe website. You may print this form on your printer, fill it in
and mail it to the address indicated in the instructions with the form.
It has been confirmed with a representative of the North Carolina State Board
of Elections that this form as printed from your computer and properly
filled in with correct and consistent information will be accepted by the
state. For more information about this form or about the Federal Election
Commission, please see the FEC website. For more information regarding voter
registration in North Carolina, please see the
NC State Board of Elections website.
Absentee Ballots
If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election day, be
sure your voice is heard by voting via absentee ballot! To vote absentee,
call or write your local Elections Office and request an application for an
absentee ballot as early as 50 days prior to an election, but no later than
one week before the election. In order for your vote to count, your completed
ballot must be received no later than 5:00 p.m., on the Monday prior to
Election Day. You can also vote absentee in person at your local Elections
Office beginning 24 days before an election and ending at 5:00 p.m., on the
Friday preceding Election Day. This is also referred to as "One-stop Voting".
The Cabarrus County Board of Elections has a number of forms and
instructions on their site. A direct link to some of these as relates to
voter registration and absentee ballots is

For more information about this or about the Board of Elections, please
see the
Cabarrus
County Board of Elections website.
Primary Elections
North Carolina hosts a closed primary election system, meaning that only
voters who are registered with a particular party may vote in the primary
election, and they must vote in the primary of the party with which they are
affiliated. However, North Carolina election law allows the parties hosting
primaries to open their primary election to unaffiliated voters should they
wish to do so. Presently, both the Republican and Democratic primaries are
open to unaffiliated voters.
