National Races

The following Republicans are running for national office in 2008.

OFFICE NAME
US President and Vice President John McCain and Sarah Palin
John McCain has served in the US Senate with great distinction for many years. A military veteran who hails from a long line of men that served their country during times of peace and of war, Senator McCain was held in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" as a Prisoner of War during the Vietnam Conflict. Had he been willing to tell lies, he would have been been released early on a number of occasions, but he refused to dishonor his country and the pledge he made to it and its people. John has a well-deserved reputation both as a reformer and as a maverick in the Senate. He enjoys a broad spectrum of voter support, from both sides of the aisle and from all ideologies. Sarah Palin is the highly popular Governor of Alaska, a mother, a wife, a conservative, an outdoorsperson, and a reformer. She stands as a great complement to John.
US Senate (NC) Elizabeth Dole
Elizabeth Dole is a public servant in the truest sense of the term. In a career spanning five decades, Elizabeth Dole has served as an activist for consumers, champion for safety improvements, advocate for women in the workplace, provider of relief and compassion to victims of disaster and elected servant of the people of North Carolina in the United States Senate. She has served five U.S. Presidents, one Democrat and four Republicans. Because of her dedication to the public interest, Elizabeth has earned the respect and friendship of people in her home state of North Carolina, across America and around the globe. Elizabeth was the first female Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Secretary of Labor, a transformational President of the venerable American Red Cross and a member of Ronald Reagan's first White House staff.
US House of Representatives (NC-8th District) Robin Hayes
Robin Hayes currently serves as our Congressman, representing the 8th District of North Carolina for the past eight years. He has worked to establish a solid pro-family and pro-business record while striving to promote job growth and economic development throughout the District. In Congress, he serves on three committees that provide direct benefit to the District: the House Armed Services Committee as Vice-Chairman of the Terrorism Subcommittee, the Agriculture Committee as Chairman of the Livestock and Horticulture Subcommittee, and the Transportation Committee. These positions allow him to provide assistance to our brave men and women serving at Ft. Bragg and Pope Air Force Base, ensure the prosperity of our family farmers and the entire Ag community, and look after the transportation and infrastructure needs of Eighth District communities. He believes that the prosperity of our communities depends on quality education, and he has worked with local school systems and community colleges to introduce new technology into the classroom and provide teachers with classroom-access to vast new resources. For further information, you may visit his website at http://www.robinhayes.com, or call his campaign office at 704-795-2000.
US House of Representatives (NC-12th District)
(Cabarrus Precincts 0204 and 0300)
Ty Cobb
Sharing the name of a famous ball player, Ty Cobb believes we should return to Common Sense legislation; back to basic American values. He wants to stabilize the US economy, launch pay down of the absolutely disgraceful national debt, and truly secure our borders while welcoming legal immigrants, but no illegal aliens. He thinks we need to get tough and transform our military (and other agencies) for the long war against terrorism. He wants to see an effective interstate fresh water transfer program that preserves fresh water as a resource and meaningful care for veterans. He strongly maintain right to bear arms and that flag desecration should be illegal. He is pro-life and wants to see America's youth developed to maximize their global competitiveness. And he wants to end "pork" as we know it today.

State Races

The following Republicans, many of whom are members of the Cabarrus County Republican Party, will be representing the GOP this November for North Carolina statewide political office.

OFFICE NAME
NC Governor Pat McCrory
Pat McCrory began his political career in Charlotte in 1989 when he was elected as an At-Large City Council representative. He was reelected in 1991 and 1993, served as Mayor Pro Tem in 1993 and elected Mayor in 1995. In December 2007, Mayor McCrory became the only Mayor in Charlotte history to be sworn in for a record seventh term. Pat has distinguished himself as a leader in the areas of public safety, economic development, housing and transportation. Now he is ready to serve North Carolina with the same enthusiasm, professionalism, and effectiveness with which he has lead the state's largest city.
NC Lieutenant Governor Robert Pittenger
Robert Pittenger currently serves as a North Carolina Senator. Robert's stand is that to make positive changes for our future, we must change the leadership in Raleigh. Only then can we arrive at new solutions and solve the problems facing our families and holding back our businesses. Please join Robert as he works to bring real change to state government, address the problems facing our families, and build a brighter future for North Carolina.
NC Attorney General Bob Crumley
Bob Crumley is a family man: Bob met his wife, Teresa, at the North Carolina Republican State Convention in 1977. Since then, the Crumley family has had an active involvement in political and public service. Bob and Teresa have been married for nearly 30 years and have two daughters. He is a leader in law: Bob received his law degree from the Wake Forest University School of Law and has practiced law for over 20 years. In 1989, after practicing law within private industry and government, Bob founded his own firm, Crumley & Associates. Starting with one office in Asheboro, Crumley & Associates is now the largest consumer-based law firm in North Carolina with 10 staffed offices throughout the state. People throughout North Carolina have come to recognize Bob's mission to help people at some of the most difficult moments of life by providing the very best legal service through caring, communicating, and managing. Bob is a leader in business: Bob Crumley is more than just a lawyer; he is a businessman who understands the concerns and needs of North Carolina's business community. As a licensed real estate broker involved in commercial and residential real estate development, and through an environmental restoration firm, Bob's companies balance the demands of a growing state while preserving our natural resources. He is a leader in his community: giving back to the community is an important principle that Bob and Teresa have stressed to their daughters. Bob is an active member of three Boards of Directors throughout North Carolina; these include The North Carolina School of Government Foundation (formerly the Institute of Government), the Executive Board of Leadership North Carolina, and the North Carolina Aviation Museum. He has previously served on the boards of directors for the Piedmont Triad Partnership Foundation and the Randolph Community College Small Business Advisory Board. He has previously served on a state licensing board and a statewide commission.
NC Secretary of State Jack Sawyer
Jack Sawyer is blessed with a wonderful wife and three adorable children. A life-long resident of North Carolina (36 years), Jack is a native of Kinston and currently resides in Alamance County where he practices law and brokers real estate. As an attorney and small business owner Jack has built a successful real estate law practice by forging strategic business alliances with bankers, mortgage brokers, realtors, general contractors, and community leaders. Jack's legal and business background has uniquely prepared him to successfully lead the Secretary of State Department.
NC State Auditor Leslie Merritt
State Auditor Leslie W. (Les) Merritt, Jr. is a lifelong resident of North Carolina. He was raised on a farm in rural Sampson County between Clinton and Magnolia, where his family raised hogs and cows and grew tobacco, soybeans, corn and other produce crops. Les' parents instilled in him the values that guide him today: hard work, the importance of faith and family, the difference between right and wrong, and the importance of spending every penny wisely. Les won a three-way primary to become the Republican nominee for State Auditor in 2000. In the general election he received 49.5% of the vote despite being outspent three to one by an entrenched incumbent. Les received 67% of the vote in the 2004 primary to again secure the GOP nomination for State Auditor. On November 2, 2004 Les achieved a historic victory, defeating the incumbent State Auditor. Les became the first Republican challenger since Reconstruction to defeat an elected Democrat incumbent on North Carolina's Council of State. Additionally, he is the first Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensed in North Carolina to serve as State Auditor.
NC State Treasurer Bill Daughtridge
Bill Daughtridge believes this campaign is about securing our financial future - for our children. The short term focus of the politicians in Raleigh is threatening our financial future. If Bill ran his business the way they run our state, he would have been out of business years ago. We need a LONG TERM PLAN and a LEADER who will deliver. The Treasurer as Guardian of the TaxPayer: It's time to get our finances in order. Infrastructure for a New Economy: If we don't build it, our children will leave. Jobs for the Future: It's about people and money.
NC Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler
Steve Troxler says, "Our State and Nation were built on agricultural roots, but in the 21st century, most of our citizens have moved away from rural areas into cities. In most cases, they are three generations removed from the farm. Yet agriculture still touches each of their lives every day. Behind every meal there is a farmer -- who worked hard to produce a safe, plentiful food supply for you and your family. My running for Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services is a natural extension of the work I have done my entire life -- providing leadership and promotion for North Carolina agriculture. I still believe that the person elected as Commissioner must have the 'Heart of Agriculture', which is acquired by experiencing the successes and the failures of crops and agricultural policy. I have that 'Heart of Agriculture'".
NC Commissioner of Insurance John Odom
John Odom believes the insurance commissioner should serve the people by helping to provide the best climate for insurers to operate, and should be the state's consumer advocate in insurance matters. He stands for serving the people of North Carolina with honesty and integrity and for a workers' compensation system that is affordable to employers yet fair to employees.
NC Commissioner of Labor Cherie Berry
Cherie Killian Berry was sworn in as North Carolina's first female labor commissioner on Jan. 6, 2001. She was elected to a second term in November 2004. Cherie, a native of Catawba County, is the former business owner of LGM Ltd., a company that produces spark plug wires for the automotive industry. Employee safety is her top priority.
NC Senate (36th District) Fletcher Hartsell, Jr.
Fletcher Hartsell, Jr. has served many roles for Cabarrus County and her citizens over the years, with perhaps the most important being our State Senator from the 36th District. Of the many committee assignments he holds, he is Chairman of the Judiciary II Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Opportunities and Needs for Economic Growth in North Carolina, and is the ranking minority member of the Education/Higher Education Committee and the Committee on State and Local Government.
NC House (82nd District) Jeff Barnhart
Jeff Barnhart currently serves as our NC Congressman from the 82nd District. He currently serves on many committees, including the highly important Appropriations Committee, on which he presides as Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services. Health care in our state is very important to him.
NC House (83rd District) Linda P. Johnson
Linda P. Johnson currently serves as our NC Congresswoman from the 83rd District. She is a member of numerous committees, including Chairperson of the House State Government Committee and Vice-chairperson of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Education and the House Select Committee on Public School Construction. As her committee assignments suggest, her primary focus is on educating our state's children.
NC Superintendent of Public Instruction Richard Morgan
This office is the statewide superintendent of all public schools. It is also a Council of State position and so is important to the Republican Party. Richard Morgan is a former state representative.
NC Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Edmunds, Jr.
North Carolina deserves the most capable men and women on its highest court. Over the last eight years, Supreme Court Justice Bob Edmunds has proven that he is the right person for the job. He is a hard-working and careful Justice who writes sound and sensible opinions. When Bob was first elected to the NC Supreme Court in 2000, he brought with him a wealth of experience in virtually all aspects of law. He has represented the United States as a Federal prosecutor and has practiced law as a partner in a Greensboro firm. He has been elected to and served on the NC Court of Appeals. His re-election campaign has the support of former NC Supreme Court Chief Justices Rhoda Billings, Jim Exum, Burley Mitchell, and I. Beverly Lake.
NC Court of Appeals Dan Barrett
North Carolina has one appellate level between the District and Superior Courts and the North Carolina Supreme Court. This is the North Carolina Court of Appeals. Our citizens deserve a government as good as they are. They deserve a court system that is as fair and impartial, and that provides justice tempered by mercy. Dan Barrett has a conservative judicial philosophy. He will not legislate from the bench. You can trust that he will be fair and impartial. And he will work to bring needed reforms to the court system.
NC Court of Appeals Jewel Ann Farlow
Jewel Ann Farlow says, "The people of North Carolina expect and deserve fairness, integrity, solid work ethic, impartiality, and respect from their appellate judges. If elected to serve on the Court of Appeals, I will apply these qualities. A judge should apply the law, and I will be a strict constructionist of the law. I will not play legal gymnastics with the Rule of Law. I will not legislate the law from the bench. The citizens of North Carolina need judges who will apply the law as written. Our constitution and laws need to be applied to protect our children and our future.
NC Court of Appeals Robert N. Hunter
After more than 35 years in private practice, Robert Hunter has decided that he would like to spend his remaining time devoted to public service. The practice of law has been very good to him. He has been able to help thousands of people from all walks of life with their problems. He has argued for their rights in state and federal court and even before the United States Supreme Court. Robert feels the call to contribute to our state in a different way, by serving on the North Carolina Court of Appeals.
NC Court of Appeals Judge J. Douglas McCullough
Judge Doug McCullough grew up in Swansboro, in Eastern North Carolina, and has devoted his entire adult life to public service. He spent twenty-nine years in the United States Marine Corps, worked on Capitol Hill with the Senate Ethics Committee, served as a Federal Prosecutor, and has proudly served on the North Carolina Court of Appeals since February, 2001. An appellate judge should have substantial trial experience, legal intellect, integrity, and the ability to communicate judicial decisions in clearly written opinions. He possesses these skills. During the past seven and a half years he has authored over 700 opinions and participated in several thousand judicial decisions.
